What is beef tallow?

Tallow is derived from cows through a delicate rendering process of converting it from suet to tallow. It has been historically favored by our ancestors for skin care. However, its popularity declined over time as animal-derived substances were later replaced by synthetic compounds, petroleum derivatives, chemically processed plant extracts, and artificial vitamins.

Where do you get your tallow from?

We are very selective in the tallow that we use. All of our tallow based products are made with grass-fed carrot-finished beef tallow from pastured cows, which is the highest quality that you can obtain. This is extremely important as it is the most nutrient dense and has the most favorable ratio of fatty acids. All tallow in our products is also sourced from San Joaquin Valley cows.

What is the shelf life of your tallow products?

Our Tallow products are recommended to be used before the "best by" date found on the product and product box. In general, this will be around a year and a half from the date that you receive it. All of the ingredients of our tallow products are very shelf-stable. The essential oils in the scented versions actually tend to keep the product fresh much longer than the "best by" date. Try to maintain the jar tightly capped and away from heat. For long-term storage you can keep any jars you aren't currently using in the refrigerator, which can help extend the shelf life.

Why do the tallow creams vary in color, consistency, and scent?

Our Tallow Balm can have some natural variation from batch to batch. Since it is crafted from natural ingredients, each batch can differ in color, texture, and scent without compromising its benefits. This variation is inherent to genuinely natural products due to diverse factors like seasonal changes and sourcing variations. Tallow, which is the primary ingredient, varies with factors like season and animal differences. Because our product is handcrafted rather than machine-made, the product's consistency may vary based on temperature. It can solidify in cooler conditions and softening in warmer ones. Even if melted, the product's efficacy remains intact upon re-solidification.

Is tallow good for oily acne prone skin?

Tallow is amazing because it closely mimics the natural oils our faces make, making it a great skincare product for all skin types. Tallow is unique because it is non comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores, so it shouldn’t cause breakouts for most people. It is also great for sensitive skin as well. If you have oily skin, it’s good to know that tallow is a little oily in nature but does soak in over time and a little bit goes a long way.
